Game Week: Day 4

Advisory Council Panel

Alonzo Mourning, Jay Williams and Jessica Davenport joined ESPN college sports analyst, Quint Kessenich, in the first-ever McDonald’s All American Advisory Council Panel. Quint served as the Panel’s moderator as Zo, Williams and Davenport dropped some knowledge on the players. The panelists and players took part in an interactive session touching on the Advisory Council’s three point mission of Charity, Legacy and Trust. 33 and Counting….

Everything that has a beginning has an end, and tonight, the 2010 McDonald’s All American Games concluded with a pair of East vs. West match-ups featuring the top male and female high school basketball stars to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio. The McDonald’s All American Games are recognized as the premier showcase in all of prep basketball and this year’s crop of players did not disappoint.

Let’s Hear It For The Girls

The Girls Game, which featured some of the most athletic and talented players in recent history, kicked-off the night’s action. The West team edged out the East squad in a hard-fought 84-75 victory at the Value City Arena. Meighan Simmons and Natasha Howard rose above the rest, with 21 and 20 points respectively, earning them Co-MVP honors.

The Boys game was a classic battle, and although hometown favorite and Co-MVP, Jared Sullinger, dropped a game high 24 points, it was not enough to propel the East squad past the West in a 107-104 nail-biter. Harrison Barnes lifted the West with a team-high 20 points, earning him Co-MVP honors, along with Sullinger, for the victorious West squad. Brandon Knight hit the game-winning shot with less than three seconds left.

On Monday, the McDonald’s All American players jumped on the party bus and headed to a McDonald’s restaurant in Columbus for some lunch and even a little customer service. The players worked behind the counter and the drive thru to serve-up their favorite McDonald’s menu items. And, Kendall Marshall may have created the next great McDonald’s sandwich … the Big Mac Filet. However, the jury is still out on that one.

Following the McDonald’s restaurant visit, players paid a visit to a popular attraction in the Ohio State capital - the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The players braved not only the cold temperatures, but overcame a few fears when they held a very, very large snake. The Players were even able to feed and hold some of the zoo residents … they were encouraged to hold the starfishes instead of the elephants, although most of the boys thought they could pick the elephant up.

Game Week: Day 1

Hello Columbus!

We’ve been waiting, you’ve been waiting and now that wait is over … it’s Game week, baby!
Forty-eight of the nation’s best high school basketball players are in the Buckeye State capital of Columbus for the 2010 McDonald’s All American Games – the 33rd Boys game and the ninth annual Girls game. The high school superstars started filing in Saturday to take part in a week chalked full of activities surrounding the Games.

All Americans in the House….

Yesterday the players kicked off Game week by experiencing first hand the true meaning of the Games when they visited the Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio to spend time with children who are receiving critical treatment at a local hospital.

After touring the House, baking chocolate chip cookies and participating in a little story time, the players visited Nationwide Children’s Hospital to lift the spirits of some very appreciative kids. The players split up into two groups – one half toured the hospital and passed out gifts, while the other half visited the Rehab Unit gym and played a few games with the children.

For many of the players, the House and hospital visit changed the way they think about helping others and commented how moved they were by their experience of giving back to the families. The visit helped the players realize that Game week is about more than just a game.

Net proceeds from the 2010 Games go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio. Since 1978 millions of dollars raised for Ronald McDonald House Charities across the country.

It’s in the Game!

Even after a long day, these players were still competing … albeit virtually. On Sunday night, the players took to the virtual court to play NCAA ’10 in the third annual EA Sports video game tournament. Players mixed in a little friendly competition, while listening to their very own Game week DJ and sitting down with the first wave of arriving media for interviews.
